BROGNON ROLLIN

THE MONOMAN OF ACCUMULATION (CHARLOTTE)

THE MONOMAN OF ACCUMULATION (HUGHETTE)
2016

One of the features of romanticism is the diffuse line between reason and madness. The romantics, like the doctors of the 19th century, thought it was possible to read the repercussions of mental alterations on facial features. Around 1820, Théodore Géricault painted a series of paintings entitled “Les Monomanes”; beings who have crossed the limits of consciousness and reason. He represented the monomaniac of envy (Lyon, Musée des Beaux-Arts), of child theft (Springfield Museum of Art), of military command (Winterthur, Oskar Reinhart Collection), of theft (Ghent, Musée des Beaux -Arts) and games (Louvre museum).

With the series Les Monomanes, we are trying to make the destiny lines of contemporary monomaniacs speak in order to capture their possible breaking points. If Géricault offers a testimony of the relations between society and the psychiatric world in the 19th century, these lines of destiny question madness today. We are no longer in 1820, but the border is still fragile between passion and obsession, between genius and mental illness, between prodigy and enlightened person.

Géricault painted monomaniacs, madmen whose imbalance is focused on a single specific aspect of their daily life, sparing the rest of their activities; we extend the series in the same way. The “Bird Monomaniac”, the twin sisters “Accumulation Monomaniac”, the “Drunkenness Monomaniac”, the “Scar Monomaniac”, the “Army Monomaniac”… These lines of destiny enlarged and transposed in neon strike us like lightning and sometimes reveal graphic features that merge with personality traits.

Franck Scurti
Reflet – Pharmacy (series B)
2004

“Reflections are representations of illuminated signs”. Franck Scurti called them that because they are slightly distorted, a bit like when you see a shape in a puddle, but here, this perception is frozen, solidified. He created a distortion between the object and its representation, to try to reveal the duality of dream and reality. These are familiar signs, which everyone knows and which allow us to understand that it is a message about the material world of today.” Be informed (Press), nourish yourself with diversity (Kebab, Halal Butcher, New Hong Kong), see the world better (Optician), take care of yourself (Pharmacy)… our culture of now global consumption finds the Reflections here that everyone will want to see, mirrors of our society and our lives.
